Installing and Configuring Norton AntiVirus for Windows XP

Installation

IMPORTANT ! If you want to update your software or schedule auto-updates, this application requires Internet connectivity. If you begin installation when you are not connected, the program may attempt to make a connection to complete the installation process.
For this product to install correctly, you need to uninstall or disable any existing anti-virus applications and restart your machine. Then, you should temporarily disable any firewall applications that are running.

Preparation and Download

1. Log into your machine with an account that has administrative privileges.
2. Go to BevoWare and download the appropriate version of Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) for your version of XP.
3. Close all programs on your machine, so that you won't lose work when you restart the machine during this installation.
4. Uninstall all other anti-virus applications, including previous versions of Symantec. Installing over old versions can cause the new version to not work correctly.
5. Disable your firewall program.

Installation

1. Double-click on the installer. A winzip window opens.,
2. Click Unzip.
3. Click Install.
4. Click Next.
5. Read and Select I accept the terms of the license agreement and click Next.
6. Click Next to install all components using the default installation location.
7. Select Unmanaged, then click Next.
8. Select Auto-Protect if you want Symantec AntiVirus to automatically monitor your system as you work. (This is recommended.)
9. If you have an active Internet connection, select Run LiveUpdate to acquire the latest version of the software and update your virus definition files during installation.
10. Click Next, then click Install.
11. If you selected Run LiveUpdate above, the installer will automatically launch the LiveUpdate program. Click Next to have LiveUpdate check with Symantec for the latest virus definitions. When the update is complete, click Finished. If you receive an "Old Virus Definition File" message, disregard it and click Close.
12. Click Finish to complete the installation process.
13. To open the program, double-click the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition icon in the Windows task bar.
14. Drag the Symantec Installer and the Symantec Folder on your Desktop into the Trash.

Schedule Updates

Schedule the anti-virus program to check for daily updates of virus definition files so that your computer will always be able to identify the newest viruses.

1. Double-click on the Symantec AntiVirus icon in the Windows task bar (if the icon is not in the task bar, open the program from the Start menu).
2. Click File, then click Schedule Updates.
3. Select the Enable automatic scheduled updates checkbox.
4. Click Schedule .
• You can also manually run LiveUpdate at any time. Click LiveUpdate from the main program window, or click File and select LiveUpdate.
5. In the Virus Definition Update Schedule window, select the Daily radio button and choose the time of day updates should occur, then click OK.

Schedule System Scans

You can schedule three types of scans. This document walks you through setting up a Scheduled scan, but the process is very similar for Startup scans (defined scans that occur when you start your system) and Custom scans (defined scans that only run manually).

To schedule weekly system scans:

1. Double-click the Symantec AntiVirus icon in the Windows task bar (if the icon is not in the task bar, open the program from the Start menu ).
2. In the left column, double-click Scheduled Scans, then click New Scheduled Scan.
3. Enter a Name for your scan, then click Next.
4. The Enable scan checkbox is checked by default. Select the Weekly radio button .
5. Click the drop-down time menu to specify the time the scan should occur, then click Next.
6. Select each disk or drive (volume) you want to scan.
7. Click Save to store your scheduled scan, or Options to modify scanning options and actions.

• To edit the settings later, click the name of your scan in the left column, then click Edit in the right side of the window.
• To run a scheduled scan immediately, double- click its name in the left column.

Set Advanced Options

Although it is not required, you can set a number of other options within Symantec AntiVirus.

File System Auto-Protect

These options specify what types of files should be scanned all the time, and what should happen when the program detects an infected file.
To set real-time virus options,

1. Click Configure, then select File System Auto-Protect.
2. Click Actions. You can specify different actions for macro viruses (such as worms that e-mail your entire address book or infect Microsoft Word documents) and non-macro viruses:

• Clean risk removes the virus, but leaves the file intact.
• Quarantine risk moves the file into a protected area. To view quarantined files, click View, then Quarantine.
• Delete risk removes the virus and deletes the infected file.
• Leave alone writes to the log file, but does not remove the virus or file.

Advanced Heuristics

Heuristics are internal program rules used to filter files and messages for viruses. Rather than looking for specific viruses, the program applies a set of rules to e-mail messages to see whether they fit the pattern for spam and viruses. You can specify stricter or looser rules. Stricter rules mean that more messages will be identified as potential problems, but this setting could increase the chance of false positives. Looser rules mean that more spam and viruses may slip through.

1. Click Configure, then click File System Auto-Protect.
2. Click Advanced, then click Heuristics.
3. Ensure that Enable Bloodhound is checked.
4. Choose Minimum, Default, or Maximum detection levels.

Microsoft Exchange Auto Protect

You can configure the scan to automatically send a customized message to any person who sends you an infected e-mail.

To set real-time Exchange options:

1. Click Configure.
2. Select Microsoft Exchange Auto-Protect.

History Logs

Click History to view virus, scan, and event history logs. These files track the results of all scans, updates, detected viruses, and actions taken by the program.
