Installing and Configuring Norton AntiVirus for Mac OS X

Installation

Preparation and download

1. Log into your machine with an account that has administrative privileges.
2. Go to BevoWare and select the appropriate anti-virus program for your version of OS X.
• OS X 10.4 (Tiger): Choose Symantec AntiVirus 10
• OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) or earlier: Choose Norton AntiVirus 9 with Virex uninstaller. If you have a previous version of Norton AV installed, also download the uninstall Norton utility.
3. Close all programs on your machine, so that you won't lose work when you restart the machine during this installation.
4. Uninstall all other anti-virus applications, including previous versions of Norton or Symantec. Installing over old versions can cause the new version to not work correctly.
5. Disable your firewall program.

Installation

1. Double-click the downloaded disk image file (.dmg).
2. Double-click the Symantec or Norton AntiVirus icon and follow the instructions in the installation wizard to complete installation. If prompted, elect to fully update Norton or run Live Update once installation is completed.
3. As part of the installation, your machine will either log you out or prompt for reboot. Do not prevent this from happening as the installation is not complete until this occurs.
4. Drag the Norton AntiVirus installer and the downloaded file (ending in .sit or .dmg) to the Trash, then empty it.
5. Re-enable your firewall program.

Note for OS X 10.2 Users: If you did not choose to run LiveUpdate when installing Norton AntiVirus or Norton Personal Firewall, you may see this error message when you reboot:

The program you are using needs to use a system file that may reduce the security of your computer.

Click DON'T USE when prompted to fix the problem. Then, run LiveUpdate to update both Norton AntiVirus and Norton Personal Firewall. This will eliminate the error message.

Scheduling Daily Updates of Virus Definition Files

Schedule the anti-virus program to check for daily updates of virus definition files so that your computer will always be able to identify the newest viruses.

1. Open the Applications folder and double-click the Norton/Symantec AntiVirus program icon.
2. Click the Schedule button.
3. Click New.
4. Select Product Update.
5. Enter "Daily Virus Defn" in the Enter a name for the task field.
6. Select Virus Definitions from the Choose a product to update list.
7. Select Daily from the Set a Frequency field.
8. Set the time for updates to occur, then click Save. NOTE: Updates occur when the scheduling user is logged in . If the user is not logged in at the appointed update time, the update will run the next time the user logs in.

You may also want to consider creating a new Weekly scan that will update All Products. This will update and install new versions of Norton as well as new versions of LiveUpdate , the Norton updating program.

Scheduling Weekly System Scanning

If you have Auto-Protect turned on (this is the default), your system will be protected most of the time. However, ITS also recommends that you schedule weekly scans of your system.

1. In the Norton/Symantec AntiVirus window, click the Schedule button.
2. Click New.
3. Select AntiVirus Scan.
4. Enter "Weekly System Scan" in the Enter a name for the task field.
5. Click the Browse button and select your hard drive.
6. Select Weekly from the Select a Frequency field. NOTE: The scan occurs when the scheduling user is logged in. If the user is not logged in at the appointed update time, the update will run the next time the user logs in.
7. Select a day of the week and time you would like your computer to perform the scan.
8. Click Save.
