Unable to Connect
Many times during the setup of a computer, something gets overlooked. If you are unable to establish a connection, meticulously verify the following:
- That your computer is turned on.
- That your cable is an Ethernet Cable, not a Crossover Cable.
- That your cable is plugged into your computer and to YOUR port. If your roommate also has a computer, make sure that you are plugging into the correct port. Make sure the cable “clicks” into place when you insert it into your computer and into the wall.
- That your port is active. If your cable is connected properly and the port is active, an LED indicator on your computer (usually on the network card) will turn on; an activity light may also begin to blink. If the link light does not come on, check your connections again.
- That your cable is good by TESTING connectivity with your Roommate’s port. Once connectivity is verified or has failed, REMOVE your cable from your roommate’s port.
If you have followed these steps and are still unable to connect, contact the ITS Help Desk. To be thorough, they will ask you to check theses items again for verification.
