Glossary
- Bandwidth
- The amount of information that you can send or receive during a given period of time through a network connection. This is usually measured in bits per second (bps).
- Disabled
- A suspension of service to a port location. Usually temporary, disables are associated with threats to the security of the network.
- Ethernet
- A method of networking computers, commonly used on a local area network. An Ethernet connection can deliver 10, 100, or 1000 megabits per second (Mbps) and can be used with many types of computers. Resnet uses a 100 megabits (Mb) Ethernet connection.
- IP (Internet Protocol) Address
- A number consisting of four parts separated by dots - for example, 127.1.1.0. Each part can have a number from 1 to 255. Much like each house has a unique street address within a city, each machine on the Internet has a different IP address.
- LAN (Local Area Network)
- A network of computers within a limited proximity (for example, the same building, or floor of a building).
- Network
- An interconnection of two or more computers that connect to share the same resources (files, printers, etc.).
- NIC (Network Interface Card)
- A card that plugs into your computer to allow your computer to adapt to the appropriate network interface standard.
- Quarantine
- The isolation of a computer from public network access. Usually associated with a disabled port.
- TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol)
- A set of protocols (computer standards, or rules) that define how communication occurs over the Internet.
